Band: Brian Haas - acoustic piano and Rhodes Mark Southerland - sax Jason Fraticelli - bass Marco Benevento - keyboards Joe Russo - drums * w/ Anthony Buonpane (Color and Talea) - alto sax Review by Eric Dunn: These two nights were much more free than any of the other shows, and conprised largely of improvisations. I may have missed a song or two on either night, but I'm pretty sure the sets are accurate despite their smaller appearance. The Zeitgeist is an intimate little room, and with freshly painted red walls and the band set up on level with the audience, you could feel the love. The first night the room was packed, with kids waiting outside when we arrived. The room would go to sell capacity two times over, so needless to say there was a good crowd present for most of the night. The standards played took on a new feel, with Russo now on drums. Speaking of Russo on drums, it had been since hsmf, and I had almost forgotten the full fury of russo. What an impressionistic jazz octopus! Haas played with incredible energy on this night....i thought the piano might have just fallen to pieces at one point....it was as if the room pulsated with the downbeat of his fingers to the keys. Marco came out of the shadows a bit more for these two nights, simply raging on the Wirrli! The spirits were flowing on this night indeed. Funny moment fo the night was during a haas solo mid set, at which point the rest of the band started dancing to the haas and his blurs of fingers. I have more to say about this night, but I have the tapes and would like to listen to it again first before I do so....so, more to come!
